Dec 23, 2009
Betsson has been one of the Swedish companies that has tried to test the Swedish governments monopoly on gambling throughout the nation. The company has done many things to try to lift the ban of gambling for the Swedish population. Together with Unibet and Expekt, Betsson has done huge marketing campaigns to create an opposition and to educate the Swedish citizens to act against the Swedish Gambling monopoly. One of the marketing strategies made by Betsson has been to open a betting shop in Stockholm.
Ever since the Betsson Betting shop opened up for business in May 2008 there has been a lawsuit from the Swedish government towards Betsson and the Swedish Government has been trying to force Betsson to close their betting shop. December 7 came the final verdict the Supreme court in Sweden that if Betsson Didn’t close their betting shop they would be fined approximately 250 000 Euros. Betsson reaction to the verdict was a decision to close their betting shop. This Tuesday December 22 Pontus Lindvall the CEO of Betsson formally closed the betting shop located in the city center of Stockholm.
Betsson is now contemplating to appeal to the EU court to get a definite decision of how the gambling monopoly is to be viewed in Sweden. The decision of closing the betting shop will not effect the ongoing gambling portal for Betsson and the company will still be offering their players online gambling action on poker, casino, sportsbook bingo and other games that all are available to play online at the Betsson gambling portal.
