Poker is more than a fun game and a game of luck. No matter if a player plays for fun or plays to win money either live or at an internet poker room there are many different skills that is needed as well as to know some basic strategy how to maximize the game so the player can walk away with the largest amount of money from the table. One of the key issues when a player gets in to a poker hand is not just the cards its also where a player is positioned at the table whether it is as small blind or sitting at the dealer position that’s called button.

There are 6 positions at the table that are the most important it is as small blind, big blind, Under The Gun (also known as UTG) which is the place right after the big blind and is the first player to act before the flop. UTG +1 the place right after UTG, all other positions between UTG +1 and The position right in front of the dealer button is all called UTG + and the number of where the passion is after the Under The Gun, after the UTG positions it is a position named cut of and that is the position right in front o the button and last but not least position is the dealer position called the button.

The position means a lot in when a player will act at the table that’s why there is a difference in how to bet before or after the flop. Before the flop a the worst position is UTG that has to act first of all, and for a player to raise in that position the player should have really good cards. After the flop the worst position to play is the small blind because the player will have to act first in all situations after the flop. The reason why it is negative to act first is that whatever the player does there is always players behind that can raise or re-raise a bet that the first player has made. The dealer button is the best position on the table because the player can check what all other players do before the button has to decide if the player wants to Check, call, Raise or Fold the cards.

When thinking of positions a player that acts early has a disadvantage no matter what kind of playing style the player has. An aggressive player can get involved in pots that become too expensive if the represent cards that they haven’t got. A passive player can easily be raised out of a pot if they check the flop, turn or river because passive players seldom play anything else than the absolute best hand. It works the other way around as well. When a player is in a late position it is easier to steal pots from passive players and take advantage of aggressive players.
